Ruddy Roye, TIME's Instagram Photographer of 2016, is our first exhibit opening of the new year. In his national project When Living is a Protest, Ruddy's roving eye relentlessly affirms the dignity of African Americans who meet spiritual and mortal threats and neglect on a daily basis.

Ruddy Roye will talk with Olivier Laurent, editor of TIME LightBox.

Ruddy began making Protest in August, 2014, when Ferguson's citizens were beginning to resist the worn-out excuses for Michael Brown's killing. Ruddy's project is ongoing and attempts to engage with African American men who cannot make lives for themselves with what they've been given, but must start from scratch.

These pictures and our discussion will be a perfect way to start 2017. They underscore The Half King Photo Series' resolve to recognize, through photography, the ongoing work, and needs of, our more vulnerable neighbors.
